Rocks Brewing Co has launched the latest member of its family following the beer’s successful launch at the cult Great Australasian Beer SpecTAPular, during Good Beer Week in Melbourne.
The Pickpocket, an existing member of the brewery’s pantheon of characters, is now an seasonally-evolving Fruit Wit Bier – the first permutation of which is an Apricot Allspice Wit. The recipe was designed by new Rocks Brewing team member Matt Cuthbert, with Head Brewer Scott Morgan ceding his position on the brewing platform – albeit temporarily.
The beer itself is unique in that it contains no barley malt – something that is only possible with the, first of it’s kind in Australia, Mash Filter brewery system used at Rocks Brewing. Instead, The Pickpocket malt bill is mostly wheat malt, along with oats, rye and flaked corn – which give a creamy texture and mouthfeel to the beer. To give it its fruity flavour, brewer Matt Cuthbert jammed 20 kilograms of dry apricots into boil before “dry-apricoting” his brew with a further 20 kilograms of fruit in the fermentor. To add a bit of character, Cuthbert also added a veritable truckload of allspice and fermented the beer with a funky Belgian Wit yeast.
The beer weighs in at a hefty 5.6% ABV and is perfect for the increasingly wintery weather that has struck the east coast.
Formerly The Pickpocket character represented the range’s apple cider, however the decision was made by Rocks Brewing to play to their strengths and stick to brewing beer. Instead, the brewing company now promotes the Hunter Valley-based Tilse’s Apple Truck Cider as part of its portfolio.
