THE BREWERY
The first of its kind in Australia, the Rocks Brewing Co brewhouse is known as a HEBS or High Efficiency Brewing System.
What does that mean? Well, we use a mash filter rather than a lauter tun.
Say what?
During the brewing process, the sugars are created by mixing hot water with the grains, which makes malt sugars.
The lauter tun allows the sugars to drain and be pumped away from the spent grain. But we have a mash filter, which instead acts as a pneumatic press – or the bastard child of a piano accordion and a teabag – to squeeze the liquid from the malt.
This means higher extract of sugars from the malt and less water usage – close to 70,000 litres in the first year – and less energy expenditure.
While the technology isn’t new, it wasn’t until 2011 that IDD, our supplier, developed the technology for craft brewers. And we’re very happy to be the first craft brewery in Australia to purchase and install this type of brewing equipment.
It is good for us as a company, better for the environment and great for you, our customers, as it means lots more fresh beer.
And her name is Connie...
